I thought this was a fun diversion from practising the songs. These are retro-styled mini-games that make you use different guitar techniques to get high scores, such as hitting the right chords to shoot down zombies. I'm not sure it has the appeal of a party game like Rock Band or anything. I do think they've tried to wrap it up in as much 'game' as possible, rewarding you with points and unlockable pedals and all that, but when it comes down to it, I think it is more of a guitar teaching tool than a score chaser. It feels to me like it's really just a 'gamified' guitar tutoring program. I found this doesn't really appeal to me like a game normally would. Because some songs I was good at while others I had no chance at. It's maybe a bit of an oversight that you can't set the difficulty manually, because if you hit a few bum notes the difficulty drops down when you just want it to stay there. And song to song, you'll be taught new techniques, like palm muting, harmonics, tremolo, barre chords, it's very thorough, but it never tries to teach you any actual music theory.

Songs start out as simple 'one note' parts, and as you do well, it adds more and more notes until you're playing the full guitar part as it was recorded. Now, Rocksmith uses a real-time dynamic difficulty system, it adjusts the complexity of the note lane on-the-fly to match your skill level. I had a lot of fun learning the intricacies of some of the fiddlier guitar parts too. Yeah that probably adds a layer of difficulty for beginners, but once you get used to it, it is a bit like reading chord charts, it's intuitive. I found it pretty challenging having to look between the screen AND what my fingers were doing on the strings, and going back and forth. It's like you're seeing THROUGH the neck if you were to hold the guitar up to the screen, then you just put your fingers where the game tells you.Īs a beginner, and when I say beginner I mean I don't know an A chord from a B chord, or I've never played the guitar in my life. Rocksmith uses a note-lane like other guitar games, but here you're looking at a horizontal guitar neck with six strings, with each string a different colour, and some frets are numbered. Probably just to get people into the songs quicker. It says your guitar is in tune even if it's slightly flat or sharp, so it's not super precise. It even has an on-screen tuner which you use, but I did think it was a bit too forgiving. Yeah, look I was really pleased to discover that this is no gimmick, it accurately reads everything you play, you know, chords, bends, slides, anything, it's really quite impressive.

The guitar sounds pretty good through the emulated effect pedals too.Īs a professional guitarist, from your perspective, do you find this to be the authentic guitar experience, or gimmicky?

Your TV or stereo effectively becomes a makeshift guitar cabinet. With the Jack-to-USB lead that comes with the game, any electric guitar or bass, or acoustic with a pick-up, will plug straight into your console and work. Oh yeah absolutely, there's nothing 'special' about this guitar. If you can find someone who knows what they're doing, they can do what's called a 'set-up' where they adjust the bridge and get the guitar sounding and feeling a lot better.īut you can use any guitar you want right? So if you've got your own guitar you can use that instead. That can actually be a bit of a handicap to how well you do in the game. The action is quite high off the neck, so it's harder on your fingers to hold the strings down when you play and the intonation is bit out, so it doesn't stay in tune very well, it can be fine here, but it goes out up here. It's a decent brand, it's an Epiphone junior, but as with all "cheaper" models it does have a few flaws. Well, firstly, can we talk about this guitar? This is the guitar that you get if you pick up the Rocksmith bundle. Cloud, tell us, what's your professional opinion on Rocksmith? Yes, this is Cloudbusting, one of Good Game's producers and also a professional musician! Cloud, you've done heaps of recording and touring over the years with the band Big Heavy Stuff, playing with Radiohead and Powderfinger. Bajo, I think if we're going to do this, we have to do it properly.Īhh what would the Rage couch be without a guest musician? But now, Ubisoft's Rocksmith has upped the ante by letting you play on a REAL guitar. There was a day when the five-button plastic guitars of Rock Band and Guitar Hero were an impressive foray into the rhythm game genre. I'm ready for the review Hex, ready to do it.
